The 100 Best Modern Movies

Well, we've passed the last benchmark. 2/3 of the 100 best movies of the past two and a half decades have now been revealed. The first 25 movies were the arguable choices, the movies whose appearances on this list could be and were contested by some people. The 20 or so films after that all undeniably deserved a place on the list, if not extremely high up. The 22 movies that followed that were absolutely fantastic films and worthy of being called modern classics, if not quite perfect masterpieces. Now we move onto the last tier of the list, the top floor of this ziggurat. Movies #33 to #1 are brilliant, some downright impeccable, pieces of work. As Mary Poppins would say, they're “practically perfect in every way.”

While I still refuse to divulge what movies are left on the list, I can tell you this much: In the remaining 33 movies to be revealed, only 19 years are represented; there aren't any more movies from 1983, 1984, 1987, 1990, 1991, or 2004. So, I'm afraid that all of you waiting to see Boyz N the Hood, Scarface, or Million Dollar Baby are just out of luck.

For those of you who are visiting for the first time, welcome. I have been counting down the 100 best movies made over the past 25 years (1980-2004). Every week or two, a new movie is added. You can use the navigation menu to the left to go through the list in countdown order or find a specific one in the alphabetical index. I would actually recommend reading the Criteria and Occasionally Asked Questions pages first, just to understand where I'm coming from with my choices and to answer some questions that will most likely arise as you read through. Or if you can't be bothered, the most recent article can be found below. Regardless, enjoy! I made this site for you. It wasn't to boost my ego (that's simply a side-benefit!). If I get every visitor interested in checking out even one of the movies listed, I've done what I set out to do. So read on and viddy well.
